Artificial turf in Washington, Utah

Turf help for the county's second-largest city, where a lot of homes and backyards are brand new.

Washington is St. George's eastern neighbor and the second-largest city in the county. Its population grew about 49% between 2010 and 2020, from 18,761 to 27,993, and much of that growth is newer subdivisions. The town dates to 1857, when settlers came to grow cotton in what became known as Utah's Dixie.

New-build backyards

A lot of Washington turf work starts with a bare lot. Builders often finish the front yard and leave the backyard as dirt or gravel. That's an easier starting point than tearing out an established lawn: there's no sod to remove, and the installer can plan grading, drainage, drip lines for trees and the turf layout all at once. It also means there's no living grass to replace, so the water district's grass incentive won't apply to that area.

What do Washington families usually ask for?

  • A turf play area or a spot for a swing set in a new backyard
  • Dog runs along side yards
  • Small putting greens off the patio
  • Turf paired with rock and desert plants to keep the hot surface area modest

Check the rules first

The water district says Washington County's largest cities adopted water-conservation landscape ordinances in 2022, and each city enforces its own. Ask Washington City and your HOA what applies to your lot before finalizing a design.

Common questions

Can I put turf in a backyard that's still dirt?

Yes, and it's often simpler than a lawn conversion. There's nothing to remove, but grading and drainage still need to be done right.

Do you cover Washington Fields and Coral Canyon?

Yes. Call with your address and we'll connect you with an installer who works there.
